Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast (born 12 November 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onestiin Gheorghe Gheorghiu dej, now Onesti Romania). She was the first person to reach a flawless 10 on an Olympic celebration. Bela Karalyi discovered Comaneci at age six. Later, she would become the Romanian gymnastics coach. She first competed at the junior national championships of Romania in the year 1969, she finished 13th. And in 1970, was crowned champion. Three gold medals were awarded in her debut competition at a junior Olympic meet in 1972 for communist bloc countries. The following year, 1973 as well as 1974, she became the junior champion in all-round competitions. At her first competition as a senior in 1975 she beat out Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva who was a five-time European champion winning four gold medals as well as one silver. She was the winner of the American Cup in New York City in 1976, becoming the first woman in history to complete a reverse double salto, which is an unmounting from uneven parallel bars. She began her career when she joined her sister Nina Wayne to perform in Ice Capades, a traveling spectacle of entertainment. The show featured dramatic ice skating shows.
